I had the privilege of going to this match over the weekend. Great seats, some of the best fans in the MLS and a crazy atmosphere. Columbus Crew has a great squad and there’s a small rivalry brewing between these two teams. There were quite a few yellow cards given in this physical match, 5 to be exact. According to the fans, there should have been a few more. It was an electrifying match up. Josef Martinez didn’t make history, but he did tie it. He tied the MLS single season goal record (27) in the 31st minute. This record has stood for 22 years. He still has plenty of time to break the record and will most likely shatter it. Gyasi Zardes scored the equalizer in the 50th minute. Villalba scored a beautiful goal in the 76th minute with some incredible footwork to put Atlanta up 2-1. United wasn’t done there though. Josef Martinez could have most likely broken the single season scoring record in the 81st minute, but played it safe and selfless and gave his teammate Miguel Almoron a beautiful assist. Almiron took the shot and nailed it, giving Atlanta a commanding 3-1 lead in the 81st minute. 5 minutes of stoppage time and that’s all she wrote. Atlanta United takes back the 1st place standing in the MLS. Check the video below for the highlights of the match.
