Since Yesterday was Memorial Day, we here at TOSS decided to take a break until today to update you with the MLB Tie Table and subsequently our Power Rankings. This week at the bottom of the table is the Baltimore Orioles with 17 points. The Dodgers overtook the Rays in previous weeks but now the Rays have hit quite a slide thanks in part to some strong weeks from the Astros, Twins, and Yankees.
A couple of notes from this past week:
- The San Francisco Giants lost their 1st Extra Inning game against the Braves over the weekend leaving only the Mariners (4-0), Twins (1-0), and Astos (1-0) as the remaining unbeaten teams in Extra Innings this year.
- The Pittsburgh Pirates started the year going 6 of 16 games in Extra Innings. They then had 2 more Extra Inning games on April 30th and May 5th and haven’t gone to extras in their last 21 games. Yet, they still lead all the MLB with 8 total EI games this season. Though 3 teams are on their tail with 7 a piece. (Diamondbacks, Braves, and Tigers)
- 4 teams are winless in Extras:
- Chicago White Sox (0-1)
- Cleveland Indians (0-2)
- Los Angeles Angels (0-1)
- Los Angeles Dodgers (0-1)
Now, here’s a look at the updated table through 5/27’s games.

As you might be able to tell from week to week are the slight differences in Wild Card teams, Playoff Seeding, and Division Winners. We can see it in this week’s standings now.
The Brewers are atop the division over the current NL Central leading Cubs.
Boston and Oakland are tied for the 2nd wild card slot using the current system but we have Oakland a clear 2.5 points above the Red Sox.
The idea of implementing ties instead of Extra Innings can impact ever so slightly the outcome of the season. It would create more opportunities for teams down the stretch as evidenced by the Reds only currently sitting 3.5 games out on our table rather than sitting 7 teams and 5 games behind the Braves for the 2nd wild card.
I’ve been a proponent of this for a few years now and I firmly believe it would help the sport all around.
See you next week.
