R. Jaracz’s 2020 Mock NFL Draft (1st Round)

Things have been odd this offseason, to say the least.

The Patriots will be without Tom Brady and I’m sure they’ll be on everyone’s mind until they draft a QB, which should lead to teams wanting to keep Quarterbacks away from the Patriots 1st round pick. Burrow, Tua, Herbert, Love, and ?. This will lead to some trading, maybe by the Patriots or others (Jaguars or Colts per se).

Saints GM Mickey Loomis is quoted as saying, “This is not a fantasy draft”. That’s true because if it was, the JETS, Dolphins, and Bills might all consider drafting a QB to draft in the 1st round so he doesn’t become “The Next Tom Brady”, even if they didn’t need him. Fantasy drafts are definitely bigger deal, especially in the dynasty format.

With that said, this will be my only mock draft. No trades. Only what I think might happen vs what I would do. Might do a 2nd round or more, but this is where I’m at, and that’s good for the moment.

Some lightheartedness.

  1. Cincinnati Bengals – Joe Burrow, QB

No secret here. Everyone thinks will happen like when we knew Mario Williams was the #1 pick in 2006. Bovada has the odds at -10,000, which is very likely.

2. Washington Redskins – Chase Young, DE

Done. If the Bengals believed in Andy Dalton as the future he would be the #1 pick. The Redskins drafted Dwayne Haskins last year so they don’t need one. Could trade back with Miami or LA so they can draft a QB or stay put and get an instant impact player.

3. Detroit Lions – Jeff Okudah, CB

They sure would love a team to trade to 2 and get a QB so Young falls here. Not here though. Looking at the roster and contract situations, CB seems the most logical. Trufant is on a 2 year deal and Justin Coleman has a potential out after this season, so finding a long term solution at the position will go a long way after losing Darius Slay.

4. NY Giants – Isaiah Simmons, LB/S

Simmons could very well be the best all around athlete in this draft. The Giants are made moves to sure up the offensive and defensive line in free agency and could potentially wait to go there. Sure would be nice to have Simmons roaming around behind Leonard Williams, Dalvin Tomlinson, and Dexter Lawrence.

5. Miami Dolphins – Tua Tagovailoa, QB

Tua’s the best QB in this draft outside of injuries. Injuries are the main issue with him and the Dolphins do not have to play him right away if there are still injuries healing. If not, they have the future of the Dolphins franchise who will eventually compete for division titles again.

6. LA Chargers – Justin Herbert, QB

He’s a west coast kid, a Pac-12 star QB, with the frame of an NFL QB. Herbert seemed to be underwhelming in college on a run heavy offense but was able to shine when they needed him. “They’ll” say he’ll sit behind Tyrod Taylor but probably not for long. Herbert will have an opportunity to become the face of the franchise soon as they begin their move into a new home.

7. Carolina Panthers – Derrick Brown, DT

Depending on if Andrew Thomas made an impact on Matt Rhule, will determine this pick for me. They could sure up the Oline with Willis or Thomas or focus on stacking the defense. I could see Rhule wanting the best defensive player he can get here.

8. Arizona Cardinals – Tristan Wirfs, OL

Wirfs had a better combine than Thomas, Wills Jr, Thomas, and Becton. For a team that cares so much about offense, it sure would be a shame if they let a porous offensive line keep them from their full potential. Just don’t draft a WR in the 1st round Arizona!

9. Jacksonville Jaguars – Andrew Thomas, OL

Anyone who watched Leonard Fournette get hit in the backfield what seemed like at least every other play will understand this pick. Jordan Love would be interesting here but Minshew has a cult following. The Minshew Magic just might make it down there. This is mainly what I hope they do for my Fournette pick in Dynasty.

10. Cleveland Browns – Jedrick Wills Jr., OL

Run on offensive lineman anybody? Bet we didn’t see this one coming. Me either but I they need offensive line help BAAAAD and Wills is 6’4” which will hold more value than the 6’7” Becton with Baker Mayfield in the pocket at 6’1”.

11. NY Jets – Ceedee Lamb, WR

Ceedee Lamb and Justin Jefferson are my top 2 WRs in the draft and the Jets need a dominant one. Jeudy and Ruggs III are smaller/leaner guys and they need a bonafide #1 target.

12. Las Vegas Raiders – Justin Jefferson, WR

I might have Wills Jr here but they also need a bonafide #1. Tyrell Williams, Zay Jones, and Renfrow are nice but Jefferson is a playmaker. Value here for defensive players doesn’t seem to fit. Jordan Love would also be interesting playing at Nevada but that ultimately comes down to replacing Derek Carr or helping him. Gruden is on the clock.

13. San Francisco 49ers – CJ Henderson, CB

I thought Xavier Mckinney makes sense here but both Sherman and K’Waun Williams are in the final year of their contracts. A future replacement for them could be in play. A star WR to combo with Deebo Samuel might look attractive but they might choose to wait on WR later in the draft and go after some defensive help. Jerry Jeudy would be in play here.

14. Tampa Bay Buccanears – Mekhi Becton, OL

This pick makes me hold my breath. The Bucs could use the pick to give Brady more weapons like Swift or Jeudy. I thought about Safety or CB but they are young on defense and might like some of the guys. RT Joe Haeg is on a 1 year deal and you have to keep Tom Brady up and untouched.

15. Denver Broncos – Jerry Jeudy, WR

I imagine this will be an easy pick for Denver. The Emmanuel Sanders replacement, except bigger and more of a #1 to accompany Courtland Sutton. Brandon Aiyuk would be in play if Jeudy is gone.

16. Atlanta Falcons – Javon Kinlaw, DT

I want the Falcons to trade back with a WR needy team at this point and acquire more picks. Chances are we draft a C. J. Henderson. Either way, I want Kinlaw because our Defensive Line is incomplete and vulnerable in the middle. Kinlaw is a big dude, who can eat space and blockers, hold his ground in the run game, and help free up the pass rushers. It’s not a sexy pick but neither was drafting a Guard last year. (Sidenote: Jonathon Taylor or Deandre Swift here would be pretty nice)

17. Dallas Cowboys – K’lavon Chaisson, DE

This probably should be the Falcons pick but with Fowler and Takk on the ends I don’t see TD stepping on anyone’s toes. Which leaves him to the Cowboys who would love him next to Poe, McCoy, and Lawrence. Would be deadly if he can stay healthy.

18. Miami Dolphins – Deandre Swift, RB

I’ve had dreams where Miami drafts Swift. It might be here or at 26 but they are getting a RB. I think Swift is this year’s “do it all” backs in many ways like Josh Jacobs was for the Raiders. He forms a nice 1,2 punch with Jordan Howard in the Miami backfield.

19. Las Vegas Raiders – Kenneth Murray, LB

Murray timed out well at the combine and hes a bigger LB than Patrick Queen. I’m sure Mayock and Gruden will love his size and speed to help solidify a young and improving Raider defense.

20. Jacksonville Jaguars – Jordan Love, QB

He’s a big guy with a big arm and I’m sure Jacksonville doesn’t want him going to the Patriots. They could take him 9th and draft the best available player here and if Minshew Mania is more like LINsanity then they’ll be looking for a QB for the future in this draft.

21. Philadelphia Eagles – Tee Higgins, WR

Higgins was put in an odd situation where he chose to sit out the combine in favor of his pro-day. However, his pro day at Clemson was cancelled with the rest of society because of COVID-19. This leaves his evaluation incomplete. Ruggs is a smaller guy and Aiyuk would be in play here but Higgins has the potential to be the best WR in the draft.

22. Minnesota Vikings – Henry Ruggs III, WR

He couldn’t stay off the board much longer. He ran a 4.27 at the combine and provides good value here. He also helps replace Diggs’ speed to keep defenses honest.

23. New England Patriots – Jonathon Taylor, RB

Before Tom Brady and Josh McDaniels became a prevalent passing offense the Patriots were a defensive team with a strong running game. Taylor would transition them into a run heavy team until they find a new QB replacement. I fully expect them to make some moves with 3 3rd round picks and 4 6th rounders. I could see them moving up and drafting a QB instead of waiting for the 4th or 5th guy to fall to them.

24. New Orleans Saints – Xavier McKinney, S

The Saints would be wise to beef up the back end of their defense to help extend their Super Bowl window with Brees. Alvin Kamara is about to earn some big money in the future so cheaper options at RB will be available later. Patrick Queen will be in play here but I personally don’t see it for Queen as a 1st rounder. LSU had a pretty mediocre defense last year and Queen was the middle linebacker, so that’s a ? for me.

25. Minnesota Vikings – AJ Epenesa, DE

Who knows if Everson Griffin will return but the Vikings must look ahead. Epenesa had a horrible combine and thus he slid. However, he played at Iowa in the BIG 10 so Minnesota fans know how he can play and should see this as a steal.

26. Miami Dolphins – Grant Delpit, S

If the Saints pass on McKinney I think they pick him. Here Delpit is available and could be better than McKinney for what the Dolphins. This would round out a very solid 1st round for the Dolphins, though they could package this pick with others and move up from 5 earlier to get the QB they want the most. Definitely worth watching.

27. Seattle Seahawks – Ezra Cleveland, OT

The Seahawks need to sure up the offensive line. I’m not sure if they’ll look guard over tackle but they need it, bad. Russell Wilson runs for his life more than he needs to and they shouldn’t force him to do it the rest of his career. Jonathon Taylor, J.K. Dobbins would also fit in nice here as they could cut the logjam at RB and focus on 1 main back with cheaper spell options.

28. Baltimore Ravens – Patrick Queen, LB

He adds speed to an already strong defensive unit. Defense has always been the Ravens way and I could see them focusing on defense with a lot of returning players on offense. I’d also look for another WR weapon potentially or McKinney if he’s available.

29. Tennessee Titans – Brandon Aiyuk, WR

Aiyuk could very well be off the board by now. The Titans are very good on defense so they look to help the offense become more explosive. Corey Davis has underwhelmed and is in the last year of his rookie contract. Adam Humphries is just a slot guy so Aiyuk would help elevate the WR core for Tannehill moving forward. Cole Kmet might also be in play here after losing Delanie Walker.

30. Green Bay Packers – Chase Claypool, WR/TE

The Packers would’ve loved to have one of the previous WRs but here lies a special gem in this draft with Claypool. Was the go to guy for Notre Dame last season receiving over 1000 yards and catching 13 TDs. He’s a threat to lineup as a 2nd Tight End and also can play as WR. He offers the best value here and he helps them in many ways offensively.

31. San Francisco 49ers – Antoine Winfield Jr, S

They have 3 Running Backs, a solid offensive line, solid defense all around. I’m sure they will look best player available here, not a RB. Winfield can play all over the secondary and eventually replace Jaquiski Tartt. 49ers might want a WR but they have a young core of guys that performed pretty well to end the year last season and they might be ok with them.

32. Kansas City Chiefs – Clyde Edwards Helaire, RB

This almost doesn’t seem fair but Edwards-Helaire seems to fit perfectly into Andy Reid’s system and he’ll definitely be available at 32. He helps make the best offense in the NFL even better as the Chiefs look to repeat as NFL Champions in 2020.
